†AUSTRALIA v INDIA 1984-85

At Melbourne, March 3. India won by eight wickets. Australia had two chances of reaching the semi-finals of the competition, both of which required them to win this match. They had either to score 223 in 50 overs themselves or, having failed to do that, bowl India out for 160 or fewer. They came nowhere near to doing either. Put in by Gavaskar (Hogg tossed up for Australia, Border being temporarily unwell), Australia were soon 37 for five, owing to a succession of loose strokes. Phillips launched something of a recovery, but when India batted Srikkanth and Shastri made light work of securing their side's 100 per cent record in the group matches. This enabled them to avoid West Indies in the semi-finals.

Man of the Match: R. J. Shastri. Attendance: 23,282.
