At Melbourne, March 2(day/night). Pakistan won by 67 runs. With no points and the lowest run-rate in their group, England needed not only to beat Pakistan but to score very fast in doing so. In the event they did well to restrict them, after Miandad had won the toss, to 213 for eight in 50 overs, fewer than had seemed probable when, with Mudassar again in good form, Pakistan reached 77 for one in twenty overs. Edmonds and Marks were mainly responsible for keeping Pakistan in check. Batting under the lights, England knew that if they passed Pakistan's total in 33 overs or less they would lead them in the competition and still have a chance of a place in the semi-finals. While Lamb, going in in the first over, was making a brilliant 81 in 69 balls it was a possibility, but when he was fifth out in the 22nd over, well caught at long leg, no-one managed to keep up the chase.
