At Melbourne, February 24. Pakistan won by 62 runs. An excellent opening partnership of 141 in 29 overs between Mohsin and Mudassar, marked by fine strokeplay and well-judged running between the wickets, gave Pakistan an advantage which they never lost. McDermott, bowling under handicap, conceded 11 runs in his first over and 36 in his first five, and when Wasim Akram produced the outstanding opening spell of the tournament, to reduce Australia to 42 for five, the match was as good as over. Bowling left-arm over the wicket at a lively medium pace, the eighteen-year-old Akram removed Wessels, Kerr, Jones, Border and Hughes in his first six overs. For a seventh successive time for Australia in Melbourne, Hughes was out for fewer than 5.
