†NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA 1984-85

At Melbourne, February 23 (day/night). New Zealand won by 51 runs, their victory assuring them of a place in the semi-finals. Winning the toss and batting they had an anxious struggle for runs, being 100 for four after 27 overs and 170 for seven after 38, with only the last four in the order left. Reid, the backbone of the innings, took 38 overs to make 62. An eighth-wicket partnership of 43 between Smith and Cairns gave New Zealand's bowlers some runs to play with, but Sri Lanka started their innings well enough to suggest a close finish. Coney, however, and Hadlee, returning after being given only two overs at the start, reduced them from 60 for two to 75 for six, and although some spirited resistance remained it was not enough to threaten the winners.

Man of the Match: J. F. Reid. Attendance: 8,759.
