At Chandigarh, January 27. England won by 7 runs. England broke the sequence of victories by the team winning the toss in a match reduced by overnight rain to fifteen overs each, which by the conditions of the tour was the minimum that qualified for one-day international status. A crowd of 25,000, by far the biggest assembly to have been allowed in Punjab since the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar seven months earlier, were rewarded for a delay of more than five hours by a spirited game in which there was never much between the scoring-rates. India were looking as likely to win as England until Shastri ran himself out with six balls remaining.

Cowdrey, who hit the stumps from mid-wicket, bowled the final over and conceded only 3 of the 11 runs India then needed.
