Second Texaco Trophy Match

†ENGLAND v AUSTRALIA 1985

At Edgbaston, June 1. Australia won by four wickets. Both sides made one change for the second of their three one-day internationals, Robinson and Thomson replacing Fowler and Holland respectively, but the game followed a very similar course to the first, in equally fine weather. England, put in this time, were given a good start by Gooch and Robinson (63 in fourteen overs) but failed to make quite the most of it. Gooch scored a fine 115 (159 balls, nine 4s), but Lamb spent 21 overs scoring 25 and England were driven to desperate measures as their overs ran out. With the help of an early life - he was missed by Gower at short extra cover off Edmonds - Border continued his wonderful run of form, first steadying the innings with Wessels and then, in partnership with O'Donnell, putting Australia just ahead of the clock. England's defeat was their eighth in their last nine one-day internationals - in India, Australia, Sharjah and at home, and it left Australia with the Texaco Trophy.

Man of the Match: A. R. Border. Attendance: 17,000; receipts:£111,650.
