At Melbourne, February 13. Australia won by 149 runs. Without the least difficulty Australia won the second of the finals and the World Series Cup with it. Having won the toss they were given a flying start by Wood and Smith, whose scoring-rate in an opening partnership of 140 was never below 5 an over. Wood, first out, scored 91 off 84 balls; Smith went on to make his first representative hundred, his deft cutting and strong driving being features of his innings. New Zealand badly missed Hadlee, whose hamstring had been slow to heal. Richard Webb, flown across from Dunedin the previous day, took Hadlee's place and finished with the best figures of the New Zealand bowlers. Australia preferred MacLeay to Thomson. Australia's 302 for eight was a new record for the competition. When New Zealand batted they were soon beyond recovery. Only Cairns, coming in at 44 for six, and some charitable bowling from Chappell and Hookes kept the game going. In a brief but remarkable display of hitting Cairns reached 50 in 21 balls, including six 6s.
