World Series Cup - First Final Match

†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1982-83

At Sydney, February 9. Australia won by six wickets. New Zealand were without Hadlee, who had pulled a hamstring in Perth, a handicap they were unable to overcome. After winning the toss and batting they struggled against some accurate Australian bowling, their score after 30 overs being 81 for four. Coney and Morrison then brought the match to life with a rousing partnership of 85 in fifteen overs. Australia, replying to 193 for seven (49 overs), had Hughes back in form and never lost touch with their target, which was reduced by a shower to 150 from 38 overs and reached with 4.5 overs to spare. A brilliant catch by Coney, diving to his left behind the square-leg umpire, accounted for Hughes. Although they had bowled only 49 overs in their three and a half hours - they were required to bowl 50 - Australia were not fined for it, as they could and should have been.

Attendance: 30,527.
