At Adelaide, January 31. New Zealand won by 46 runs. In temperatures which rose to 107.6 degrees in the shade Australia lost again, their fifth defeat in six matches. New Zealand thus made their appearance in the finals virtually certain, if only on their scoring-rate which was much superior to Australia's who could now only equal New Zealand's points total. Australia brought in MacLeay, an all-rounder of medium pace, and Hogan, an orthodox left-arm spinner, in place of Lillee (dropped for the first time in his international career) and Wessels. New Zealand chose to bat and Turner, despite being troubled by the heat, made 84 in 34 overs, the innings which decided the match. Although five other New Zealanders reached double figures, none passed 20. At 100 for two, with twenty overs left and Hookes not out, Australia seemed to have the match in hand. But Hughes and Chappell went cheaply, Marsh was well caught near the sightscreen, Hookes was caught at the wicket, and when Thomson was yorked Australia had lost their last seven wickets for 50 runs.
