†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1982-83

At Adelaide, January 30. England won by 14 runs. By succeeding where they had failed the previous day, England kept alive their hopes of reaching the finals of the competition. Choosing to bat first they lost Botham, Lamb and Tavaré in the first nineteen overs before Gower and Randall added 106, Gower again appearing unruffled by the atmosphere generated by a large and enthusiastic crowd. In great heat Australia, plagued by wides and no-balls, bowled only 47 of their 50 overs in the three and a half hours allotted to them. For this they were fined approximately £170 per player. In trying to make 229 to win at 4.87 an over Australia lost Border at 27, in the eighth over, and were not well served by Dyson, who took 26 overs to score 17. Hookes, hit on the ankle in a club match the day before, was the best of the Australians until Jesty, running in from deep mid-wicket, caught him off Jackman. All tickets for the match were sold in advance.

Man of the Match: D. I. Gower. Attendance: 34,897.
