At Adelaide, January 29. New Zealand won by four wickets. A match which produced 593 runs from 98.5 overs saw New Zealand bring off a remarkable victory. England's 296 for five, a record for the competition, seemed secure from assault, especially when New Zealand, after twenty overs, were only 79 for two. But from then on New Zealand scored at more than 7 an over, Cairns making 49 in 24 balls, Hadlee 79 in 64 balls and Coney 47 not out in 51 balls after Crowe and Wright, benefiting from poor English catching, had first raised the tempo. On a perfect pitch and in great heat England, with Botham bowling under the handicap of a strained side, lost all control, Coney making the winning hit with seven balls remaining. England's own run-spree had been launched by Botham with several huge hits and continued by Gower, whose third hundred in four one-day games against New Zealand took 85 balls.
