†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1982-83

At Sydney, January 26. England won by 98 runs. Australia's first defeat by England came on Australia Day in a match reduced to 41 overs a side by afternoon rain. It was their second-line players who carried the day for England, Jackman, having his first game since before Christmas, Gould, Marks, Jesty and Hemmings all doing well after they had won the toss and lost their first four wickets for 47 runs. Randall played another useful innings, his partnership of 54 with Jesty being the first to hold Australia up. With 24 in their first two overs, bowled by Willis and Jackman, it looked as though Australia might repeat their performance of three days before when they punished the England bowlers unmercifully. But Willis steadied things, and when Jackman found a length, on a pitch not entirely unhelpful to him, he removed Hughes, Chappell and Wessels in seven balls. Australia lost their last eight wickets for 37 runs.

Man of the Match: R. D. Jackman. Attendance: 41,048.
