†ENGLAND v NEW ZEALAND 1982-83

After their success against Australia on the same ground two days earlier, New Zealand were now fancied to beat England. Instead they were heavily beaten, mainly because of a superb partnership of 190 between Tavaré and Lamb, who came together when England, needing 200 to win, were 10 for two. Starting slowly, against some testing overs from Chatfield and particularly Hadlee, they had taken the score only to 47 for two after twenty overs. The remaining runs then came at the rate of very nearly 8 an over, with Lamb storming to a brilliant hundred, scored off 104 balls, in the over in which England won. For Tavaré, his innings of 83 not out marked a spectacular return to form, after being dropped by England in their previous match. New Zealand had also lost two early wickets, those of Wright and Howarth, before Edgar and Turner added 81. After 40 overs New Zealand were 156 for five, but their final attack rather petered out. Several fine catches were made for England, notably by Gower, Randall and Miller.
