†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1982-83

At Sydney, January 18. New Zealand won by 47 runs. Australia's first defeat of the 1982-83 World Series Cup came after they had put New Zealand in and pinned them down, in the first 25 overs of the match, to 87 for the loss of Wright and Howarth. Turner (55 in 21 overs) and Crowe (56 in 27 overs), with Coney and Webb in useful supporting roles, turned this into a winning total of 226 for eight, the last six overs producing 63 runs, 17 of them off Rackemann's last, which included two no-balls. When coasting along in reply Australia suddenly lost Dyson, Chappell and Hughes in successive overs, and with twenty overs left they still needed 140. Eight overs later they were chasing hard, with Hookes in brilliant form until, as the non-striker, he was unluckily run out, Coney, the bowler, deflecting a drive by Wessels into the stumps. After that Australia, hitting at everything, lost their last six wickets for 34 runs.

Man of the Match: D. W. Hookes. Attendance: 31,461.
