†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1982-83

At Brisbane, January 16. Australia won by seven wickets. Having been put in, on a good morning for bowling, England were dismissed for 182 and easily beaten. Losing Gould, run out, in the second over, and Cook, brilliantly caught at second slip at 10, England were soon looking to Gower to save them again. This time he went for 22, bowled off the inside edge by Hogg. Randall and Botham added 57 for the fifth wicket, giving England some hope of a total in excess of 200, but Botham could not contain himself and Randall, when playing well, threw away his wicket, so that at 178 for nine England had seven overs left and no-one to take advantage of them. Thomson, being wild, was responsible for more than his share of the 37 extras. A capacity crowd (tickets for the match had been sold out for a fortnight) saw Australia win with nine overs to spare, Hookes finishing the match with a fine flourish, scoring the last 22 runs in an over from Willis.

Man of the Match: D. W. Hookes. Attendance: 22,174.
