World Series Cup

†ENGLAND v NEW ZEALAND 1982-83

A magnificent innings by Gower set England on the road to their first victory in the competition. Coming in in the ninth over, after England had been sent in to bat, Gower was out off the last ball of the innings, having made a chanceless 158, the highest individual score since the World Series Cup started in 1979-80. Previously, Richards's 153 for West Indies against Australia in Melbourne was the best. Gower hit four 6s and eighteen 4s and received 118 balls in a brilliant exhibition of relaxed strokeplay. His most effective partner was Randall, who helped to add 113 for the fifth wicket. New Zealand fell away after a promising start, Marks taking three good wickets in his ten overs. Gould, having been preferred to Taylor, made a lively opening partner for Tavaré, held two catches and made a stumping.

Man of the Match: D. I. Gower. Attendance: 12,585.
