†AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1982-83

At Melbourne, January 9. Australia won by eight wickets. New Zealand fell away badly after making a lively start. Hughes, captaining Australia for the first time at home (Chappell had stood down at the end of the Test series), put New Zealand in, and when Wright was first out, in the sixteenth over, the score was already 84. But with Turner resting a sprained knee and the middle order failing, New Zealand were all out with 5.1 of their 50 overs still unused. After a cautious start, Wessels and Dyson, opening for Australia, made 154 together in 40 overs and put the result beyond doubt.

Man of the Match: J. Dyson. Attendance: 45,259.
