At Melbourne, January 10. New Zealand won by ten wickets. The loss of eighty minutes" play to rain caused the match to be reduced to 34 overs each. New Zealand needed well below the quota to fulfil their requirement of 113 runs. Man of the Match Edgar scoring 65 of them off 87 balls, India, asked to bat first, were struggling desperately for survival at 34 for three when the rain came, midway through the eighteenth over, and any hopes of their accelerating were dashed when, almost immediately after the resumption, Patil was out to a desperate stroke.
