At Leeds, June 13. New Zealand won by eight wickets. As against Sri Lanka four days earlier, Burgess, winning the toss, sent in the opposition on a morning ideal for bowling. There was a heavy atmosphere and some dampness in the pitch. After an early escape when he offered a difficult return catch to Hadlee, Gavaskar batted with great care, but Gaekwad, Vengsarkar and Viswanath all went cheaply and India had reached only 50 in the twentieth over. Patel, appreciating the need for enterprise, hit boldly, and this encouraged Gavaskar to come out of his shell. Kapil Dev and Ghavri also played well with Gavaskar, but New Zealand gave little away. Hadlee served them splendidly, even if he took only two wickets, including that of Gavaskar.

A noble opening partnership of 100 by the left-handers, Wright and Edgar, provided a comfortable start for New Zealand, particularly as Howarth was absent with a pulled hamstring. Cairns, promoted to quicken the run-getting, soon fell, and it was left to Turner to finish the match in an unbroken stand of 80 with the youthful Edgar, who gained the Man of the Match award.
