Essex v West Indians

At Chelmsford, August 1-3. Drawn. Toss: Essex. County debut: S. J. Cook.
Essex went through the first-class season unbeaten, though they might have lost to the tourists but for the rain which prevented any play on the second day after lunch. When the heavens opened, Essex were 47 for four - three to Roach, moving the ball at pace - and were indebted to Walter's maiden fifty next day. That complemented some tidy bowling which brought him four wickets, including the Hope brothers for 22 apiece (and Kyle for a duck in the second innings). The match ended quietly as the West Indians took the chance for batting practice. Chase top-scored in both innings, adding a round 50 to the 81 he had made in front of a sizeable first-day crowd.
