A century opening stand gave Bangladesh the perfect start, until Imrul miscued a slog sweep off Mitchell Santner in the 22nd over: Broom sprinted back from short third man, flung out an arm, and clasped the ball. From there, the innings spluttered, with the three spinners, including Jeetan Patel - playing his first ODI since October 2009 - each going at less than four an over. As the squeeze came on, Shakib tried a quick single, but Luke Ronchi shed a glove and threw down the stumps at the non-striker's end. That left Bangladesh 168-5 and, despite a personal-best 44 from replacement keeper Nurul Hasan, their eventual 236 was inadequate.

New Zealand's openers departed quickly - Martin Guptill to a hamstring strain - and Broom was dropped on nought. But, in his first international partnership with Williamson, he helped dismantle the bowling in a New Zealand all-wicket record stand against Bangladesh of 179 (beating 158 between Martin Crowe and John Wright at Sharjah in 1989-90). It was also their second-wicket best against any country, 20 more than Guptill and Williamson managed against Pakistan at Auckland in 2015-16. Broom just missed a second ODI century, but victory came soon after.
