West Indies v India 1982-83

Yet again, the Guyanese public had to endure a Test match spoiled by the weather

15-Apr-1984
Yet again, the Guyanese public had to endure a Test match spoiled by the weather. Heavy overnight and early-morning rain prevented any play on the sodden ground on the second and fourth days and before lunch on the third. In the event, on a typically beautiful batting pitch, only thirteen wickets fell while over 750 runs were scored.
For the third time in the series, Lloyd won the toss but this time decided to bat first and, by the end of the first day, West Indies were 259 for five after the late loss of three quick wickets. Richards was then 97 and had to wait through the rest day, Good Friday, the rained-out Saturday and until after lunch on the Sunday before he could resume to complete his fourteenth Test century and his first on the ground, with two 6s and nine 4s.
India were left with two days to bat for a draw and, when rain reduced this by half, the last day was of no more than academic interest. Gavaskar used the occasion to pass Sobers's tally of 26 Test centuries on the ground where, twelve years earlier, he had scored his first. He offered a direct catch to second slip off Marshall when 44, but that was his only mistake in five and a half hours, in which he hit one 6 and seventeen 4s, passing 7,500 Test runs.
