Gavaskar used the occasion to pass Sobers's tally of 26 Test centuries on the ground where, twelve years earlier, he had scored his first. He offered a direct catch to second slip off Marshall when 44, but that was his only mistake in five and a half hours, in which he hit one 6 and seventeen 4s, passing 7,500 Test runs.
