Days after rescuing Bangladesh from the doldrums against India, he did it again, and went one better

100 not out vs India, Mirpur
Less than 48 hours after Mehidy resurrected Bangladesh in a tenth-wicket stand with Mustafizur Rahman in Mirpur, he had another fire to douse: the home side were 69 for 6 when he walked in in the 19th over of the second ODI.
The firefighting began slowly and quietly, allowing the Indian bowlers to continue to dominate for a while, with the odd boundary. Mehidy mostly batted within himself. Mahmudullah was the right presence at the other end, although after the game Mehidy said that he had to calm down the senior batter at times too.
Mehidy went after the spinners in the middle overs, stamping his authority with sixes on the leg-side boundary. The large crowd could sense something big was in the offing when he reached his fifty, but Mehidy saved his best for the last three overs. He raced towards his hundred with two sixes in the last over, getting to his maiden ODI century with a single off the very last ball of the innings.

Key moment

When Mahmudullah fell in the 47th over, Mehidy was batting on 66. It would have been perfectly sensible for him to look to corner the strike with the tail coming in, to ensure his team reached a middling 240 or thereabouts. Instead, Nasum Ahmed powered up with big hits, leaving Mehidy with freedom to go for it. From 66 off 71 balls, he raced to his hundred in the next 12 deliveries.

The numbers

1 Number of batters to score a hundred at No. 8 or lower in ODIs before Mehidy's innings. Simi Singh of Ireland is the only other lower-order batter to have done so, also from No. 8, against South Africa in 2021.
2 Number of times Bangladesh have won an ODI after losing six wickets for less than 70 runs. The previous occasion also involved Mehidy, when he added 174 runs with Afif Hossain to rescue Bangladesh from 45 for 6, earlier in 2022.
21 Years since a batter scored more than 300 runs from No. 8 in a calendar year. The last man to do so was Heath Streak (497 runs) in 2001.

What they said

"Miraz is a quiet hero in this team. He is consistent in all formats. He can bat anywhere. Deals with pressure really well. You can always rely on him"
- Russell Domingo, then Bangladesh head coach

The closest contenders

Ishan Kishan
210 vs Bangladesh, third ODI, Chattogram

Kishan's breathtaking 210 underlined how a batter cannot just rely on his skills but has to take calculated risks to make monumental scores. He hit 24 fours and ten sixes, getting to the fastest ODI double-hundred in the process. His acceleration from 100 to 200 was a sight to behold - the first hundred came in 85 balls, the second in 41 - and so were his celebrations.
Travis Head
152 vs England, third ODI, Melbourne

Head put the English attack to the sword for the second time in three matches, this time hitting his highest ODI score, while adding 269 runs in the opening stand with David Warner. It bookended an impressive year for Head - he finished with 550 runs at 68.75.
