England v Sri Lanka
At Leeds, July 2
15-Apr-2003
At Leeds, July 2. England won by three wickets. England 4 pts. Toss: England.
A match reduced to 32 overs a side by rain was promptly hit by two hurricanes. Jayasuriya
smashed five sixes in a murderous 87-ball 112, and Trescothick responded with 82 from 60, before
England's batting depth won the day. After putting Sri Lanka in on a grey Yorkshire afternoon,
Hussain could only watch as Jayasuriya, merciless off his legs, dismembered his attack en route
to a 78-ball hundred, the second-fastest in a one-day international in England and his 12th in all.
Hoggard bowled the joint-most expensive four-over spell in history. Needing more than seven and
a half an over, England lost Knight to Vaas's fourth ball, stumbled to 126 for five, but were kept
in the hunt by Trescothick, who had sped to a half-century in 39 deliveries. When he finally picked
out long-on, Collingwood and Stewart added a feisty 66 in less than nine overs. With the light
fading and time running out, Gough, back at last after a knee injury, hit the winning runs in front
of his home crowd to crown a pulsating afternoon.
