Finally, two Test nations provided a contest worthy of the name. With New Zealand 146 for nine, chasing 152, at the start of the 24th over, Williamson calmly etched himself into folklore with six over long-on off Cummins. The resulting bedlam would normally have led to a noise-control call-out in this suburb of Mount Eden, but no New Zealander begrudged the decibel levels. Richard Hadlee handed McCullum the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, which was at stake in this match. The theatre throughout reached Broadway standards, as 19 wickets fell in just 55.3 overs, 12 of them to left-arm seamers - comfortably a one-day international record. New Zealand were spearheaded by Boult, who claimed five in 17 legal balls without conceding a run off the bat. Australia had reached 80 for one in the 13th over, before Watson and Warner fell in successive deliveries to Vettori and Southee. Vettori had Smith caught behind to make it 95 for four. Then Boult took over. His first five, wicketless, overs had cost 24, but now he swung his way through a stunned Australian middle order, including Clarke, finally returning from back and hamstring problems. Eight fell for 26, and Haddin alone held up the one-way traffic, coaxing 45 out of the last wicket with Cummins. But, when New Zealand raced to 78 in the eighth over for the loss of Guptill, with McCullum charging at Starc and Johnson in a merciless 21-ball half-century, the Auckland crowd were taunting the Australians with chants of "You're worse than England." They sang too soon. Cummins removed McCullum, and Starc bowled Taylor and Elliott in consecutive balls. From 79 for four, Williamson and Anderson moved to 131. But Starc produced prodigious inswing on his way to six for 28 - like Boult, a career-best. Five wickets tumbled for 15 in three overs, leaving New Zealand still needing six.
