Viv was one of the greatest batting geniuses of all time who blended the agression of a boxer with the creativity of a musician ,charisma of a Hollywood actor and the temperament of a soldier.Statistically Sunil Gavaskar ,Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara overshadow Sir Viv but often figures hardly tell the true story who eclipsed all those greats as a match-winner.Although outwardly looking like hitting the ball hammer and tongs there was a unique technical aspect about Viv's batting who was not a mere slogger and had a clinical or subtle element to his batting.
Some of Viv's best innings were in Kerry Packer world series cricket when he overshadowed great batsmen like Barry Richards and Greg Chappell. As a one day batsmen I rate him the best of all as he was more innovative than even Tendulkar.Overall in test cricket lack of consistency and not being sufficiently tested in a crisis may just place Brian Lara ,Sobers or Tendulkar ahead by a whisker.
No batsmen ever pulverized great pace bowling attacks as ruthlessly or in such a cavalier manner as Viv who could set a stadium ablaze.Nor did any batsmen turn the complexion of a match as Viv who in full flow resembled a military tank launching a blitzkreig on the enemy. If he wished he could have broken all the batting records possessing such razor sharp reflexes. From 1976-81 including playing in Packer cricket Irate Viv only 2nd to Bradman and against genuine pace the best batsmen ever.Even the Don may not have surpassed Viv's spectacular performance of averaging 86.2 in 1977-78 season of World series cricket in Australia.Tendulkar had more finesse,Greg Chappell more techncally correct and Zaheer Abbas more graceful but none could match the presence Viv executed when striding in to bat resembling a great emperor coming to adress his subjects. From the bouncy Australian tracks ,to the seaming English wickets and turning wickets in the sub-continent Viv was a equally a champion.
There has been no batsman who has dominated bowlers like Sir Viv. has done, period. He had amazing reflexes.
