Why don't we have a world cup of 12 teams with 3 groups of 4. Three teams from each group qualify for the next round of 9 teams but play against the other 6 teams qualified from the the other two groups. The best 4 then qualify for semi's. The maximum matches a team will play is 11 to win. Totals number of matches will be 48. The total number of matches in the first round will be 18. Totals number of matches in the second round will be 27.There will far less meaningless matches and the low ranked teams will be eliminated after the first round. Top nine teams will play against each other.
10 teams no boring matches each day competetive cricket will be played no empty stadiums...no predictability whose going through to qualify that is the best thing icc shouls stick on this plan. No matter what people says at last they will realise what they have witnessed a highly competetive tournament not like the current endless hectic event with meaningless matches.
The are two separate things which should not be conflated: the length of the tournament and the number of teams participating. There seems to be a perception that less teams will mean a shorter tournament. This is unlikely to be the case based on the proposed format in 2019. The round robin will consist of each team playing nine games against the other teams! Unless the ICC adopts a policy of two games on one day, this tournament will also drag on forever. You can still shorten the tournament by including the Associates.
Next World Cup should be played on HOME and AWAY basis so that spirit of TRUE WORLD CHAMPION could be found.
You know what, get top 6 at the end of champion's trophy in 2017 to automatically qualify, and the last 4 + top 4 associates (i.e. 11-14) get in a home away series' 3 games each over the course of year, and it should be managed such that it ends atleast 9 months before the first game in the WC in 2019, that means the top 6 + top 4 qualifiers get a know-how of their opponents and that quarter of a year can go into the preparations, best possible option without increasing the teams and associates get a fair shot and so do the top 4 to prove that they belong in the top 10.. simple, but ICC won't do it...
Superficial analysis by Chappell as always don't know why he is considered a cricket expert, he rarely offers a balanced analysis, there's only one way to do anything in his mind and that's his way. All teams have to play exactly the same way which would make cricket such a boring sport. Which is probably why he hasn't been all that successful as a coach.
If WI have to play associates to qualify for WC, they will certainly make way. The thing is to make them competitive at higher level, and for this ICC needs to make sure for fair management by the WICB, and dispute between board and players be alleviated permanently. Such disputes must be banned from world cricket and teams should be punished for such incidents.
This view is like FIFA doing away with Asia, Oceania, Latin America out of football worldcup. As it stands now, International Cricket will be ruled only by India for the money and Australia for cricketing prowess. Cricket is itself dying as a game, the world do not have time to watch 5day Tests, ODI's are somewhat popular and to keep the crowd interested cricket has evolved T20s. With less teams and with repeated/frequent series between same two teams it will contribute to spectator fatigue. I wonder how many Indians keenly watched the Final between AUS and NZ ? I am sure it is in far far less in numbers then should India had been playing in final. If the associates are not allowed to play with the best frequently they will never grow and they can only play with the big ones in WC like these. Big teams will never tour associates because they do not have the money to dish out . Although money is ruling the roost now but ultimately the game will suffer hugely in the long run.
The world cup final must be 3 matches. This will ensure only the best team wins. In one day cricket its possible that one team has a very good day and the other has a bad day. A best of 3 finals evens things out for me. I just get a fealing that it was Australia's day yesterday and NZ had a bad day at office. Plus NZ was playing their first match away from their home in the tournament.
Definitely need to address the balance between bat & ball by having larger boundaries & addressing the problem concerning the thickness of the bats. Having these high scoring or one-sided matches is just so boring.
