Gibbs got 309 test wickets in seventy one test matches, bowling at the best, 90% of whom have made their countries' all-time eleven. He would have had ten wickets per test match in this era. Had he played 130 test matches . He certainly would have had 1000 teat wickets, look at the ones with 700 wickets. They do not come close to him as a bowler. You are to talk to Gary Sobers or S. M. Nurse (He made Nurse looked like a school boy each time he faced Gibbs) about Gibbs.
James... Gibbs took barely 1000 wickets in his whole career, 300 in 79 Tests, are you seriously suggesting he would have played 250 Tests in the modern era?
@ Rajagopalan Narasimhan, while analysing Harbhajan's bowling Prasanna mentions that Harbhajan was the natural successor to himself and Venkat. Five off spinners discussed by him have some unique facets. Nobody doubts Venkat's talents except may be statistically minded people. Both Prasanna and Venkat were top class .Their bowling actions were a joy to watch.
I am sure Prasanna's rivalry with Venkat continue as he does not bother about agreeing that venky too is a good spinner and Pras wont talk or accept about venky as a good bowler
Those were the days when real cricket was played by really great cricketers . That West Indies team had terrorized every cricket tem all over the world. Hall, LLoyd, Gilchrist, Sobers, Gibbs and the others could tear any team apart and reduce a five day match to a three day affair. They don't make them like that anymore.
I think mr lawrence exagerate this too much. Lance was one of the greats for sure and the best in his time,i had the priviledge watching him bowl which was a joy to watch.Gibbs was the type of bowler who bowled an over so fast that had he played today wi would have no problem keeping up with the overate.Lance gibbs broke fred truman record when he took 303 test wickets and for a period of time was the leading wicket taker in the world.
Lance Gibbs in my view is the best spin bowler of all time. Had he played in this era, he would have finished with more that 1000 test wickets.
