Bedi & Chandra ( Venkat) were also lucky to have played with Prasanna. Bedi's action is admired by everybody for its perfection so also was Prasanna's action. There was energy in his action which he imparted to his deliveries that's why the ball had fizz and hissed like a cobra as described by the great Solkar who said he could hear the ball arriving. V V Kumar wrote Prasanna's action was perfect when he entered first class cricket.Chandra's action was full of energy while Venkat's action was very simple and perfectly side on. Strike rates for bowlers of that era is high and the defensive mindset prevailed in the batsmen of that era.Times are always changing & today in business like atmosphere many a bowlers with questionable actions have been allowed to thrive for a long time. But I find test match cricket still enjoyable.
Bishans Test career bowling SR of 80+ is very ordinary to be honest. Even his average of 28+ is far from outstanding after having played 68 Tests. Venkatapathy Raju almost matches his numbers in 28 Tests (also left arm). Bishan is probably better remembered for his first class record (ave 21+ SR 57+).
There were other great spinners in India who never played a test. Could we have a series on them too? Padmakar Shivalkar, Vijaykrishna, Hans come to mind immediately.
Prasanna was lucky to have played along side such great spinners as Chandra & Bedi. This spinner Trio was formidable combo for most countries to deal with either in India or abroad. Bishen Bedi was a master of flight, length & accuracy. He used to warn the batsmen to Never play cross bat to his bowling. Many tried but perished! But the most accurate exponent of LH spinners was undoubtedly Bapu Nadkarni. Nadkarni's figures in 1964 Test match Vs. England @ Madras read 32-27-5-0. The big difference between Bedi & Nadkarni was the flight variations of Bedi vs. flatter delivery of Nadkarni. Bedi was a willy as a Fox, who deceived the batsmen with spin & flight. I would rate Bedi next only to great Vinoo Mankad in LH spinners. Mankad & Subash Gupte (RH leg spin) were the 2 best spinners the world has ever seen. India always produced the best spinners & excellent captains like Hazare, Wadekar & Pataudi who knew how to handle the spinners. Dhoni should take a page out of these great captains
These past spin masters like Prasanna, Bedi, Chandrasekar should use their past experience and open academies to pass on skills to new generation. It would also give them income.
