One-day internationals (5): Zimbabwe 1, West Indies 3

West Indies started their tour of southern Africa with what was supposed to be a gentle workout against Zimbabwe, but received a jolt when they lost the first game, with the middle order showing a lack of urgency. Things returned to the script after that, West Indies sealing the series with three emphatic victories before the final match was washed out.

They moved on to South Africa happy that several of their players had worked themselves into form: Runako Morton, one of the villains of the first-match go-slow, ended as the leading run-scorer with 250, while Jerome Taylor led the wicket-takers with 11.

For once there was also some good news for Zimbabwe, who benefited from the more positive approach of their new coach, Robin Brown. Victory in the first match came through an impressive team effort, while in the fourth game Vusi Sibanda and Hamilton Masakadza set a new national first-wicket record with a stand of 167. There was also a welcome return for left-arm spinner Ray Price, back after falling out with the Zimbabwe board and trying his luck with Worcestershire: although he only took one wicket, he went for less than four an over in his first internationals for more than three years.
