Wisden

2000

The Millennium edition included a special section looking back at the entire 20th century. The centrepiece was the announcement of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Century, voted on by a panel of 100 prominent cricket figures from around the world - writers, commentators and ex-players. Every one of them voted for Don Bradman, and 90 for Garry Sobers. The final three spots were more closely contested, but went to Jack Hobbs, Viv Richards and Shane Warne. There were also looks back at the best summers, the best photographs and the best matches of the previous century, while Yorkshire were anointed County of the Century despite having won the last of their 26 Championship titles in 1968. Outside the special section there were tributes to Malcolm Marshall, who had died of cancer, and the late E. W. Swanton, plus coverage of the 1999 World Cup in England. The traditional Five Cricketers of the Year all came from outside England, who had endured a miserable home summer: Chris Cairns, Rahul Dravid, Lance Klusener, Tom Moody and Saqlain Mushtaq. This was the last almanack for four years to be edited by Matthew Engel, who had been posted to Washington by his newspaper, The Guardian.
