The editor expressed anger that an unseasonably cold May, which limited attendances, was heralded by some as being a sign that cricket was losing its appeal. As the summer arrived, the sun shone and all was well as Kent won their first Championship title. But Sydney Pardon was even angrier at suggestions that boundaries be shortened to allow for more big hitting, going so far as to say that "in ideal conditions every hit should be run out as in the old days". He was also riled by WG Grace's proposal to split the County Championship into two divisions, mainly on the grounds that the "most famous counties might be put down into the second tank". It was a year that left Pardon chuntering.
