Obituaries in 1940

ELLIS, MR. MAT, prominent as a player and legislator for Victoria, died in November 1940. He served on the Victoria Association from 1904 to 1930 and helped to establish the Australian Board of Control. As a member of the Selection Committee, he was noted for the courage of his convictions--as emphasised in the Victorian annual report. His hospitality to visiting teams was much appreciated. From 1901 he occasionally found a place in his State eleven and shared in a Victorian record last-wicket stand in the 1903 New Year's match with South Australia. He was joined by T. Hastings when nine wickets were down for 261, and then added 211--then the second highest tenth-wicket partnership to the 230 made by R. W. Nicholls and W. Roche, an Australian, for Middlesex in 1899 at Lord's. Ellis played a good innings of 118, his highest for Victoria, in an aggregate of 521 runs, average 21.70. The last wicket record now stands to the credit of J. E. H. Hooker and A. F. Kippax, 307 for New South Wales at Melbourne in December 1928.

TYSSEN, REV. CHARLES AMHURST DANIEL, died on Christmas Day, 1940, aged 84, and was buried at Cheriton on New Year's Day. He played for Harrow, and in the 1875 match with Eton helped to save his side from defeat. Harrow followed-on and lost six men before Tyssen joined Chater, and they played out time, Tyssen making 39. In a match for Harrow against M.C.C. he scored 20 in a total of 31 and was not out. Twenty years later, 1896, Tyssen played for Authors Club against The Press Club at Lord's and went in first with Dr. Conan Doyle; there was a prolonged stand on sudden turf while drizzling rain fell. Tyssen scored 97 and Conan Doyle 101 not out. J. M. Barrie took part in the match, which was drawn. A photograph of the teams grouped in front of the pavilion appeared in Black and White.
