The death of George Lohmann, from an attack of consumption at the age of just 36, cast a shadow over the 1902 edition. Lohmann's Test record remains unparalleled to this day - 112 wickets in 18 matches at 10.75 - and in the opinion of CB Fry, he was "by far the most difficult medium-pace bowler I ever played on a good wicket." It was appropriate, therefore, that the editor's notes should be rejoicing in the resurrection of the bowler in 1901: "Never within the last twenty years or more has there been so little unfair or doubtful bowling." Towards the end of the season, a team of amateurs, led by Bernard Bosanquet, the inventor of the googly, set off for a tour of Canada and America.
