Col. Francis Rhodes

COL. FRANCIS WILLIAM RHODES, C.B., D.S.O., died of blackwater fever at Groot Schuur, Cape Colony, on September 21st. He was an elder brother of the late Mr. Cecil Rhodes, and was born at Bishop Stortford on April 9th, 1851. He was educated at Eton and Sandhurst, and in 1869 and 1870 appeared against both Harrow and Winchester. His greatest success in the Public School Matches was gained in the Harrow match of 1870, when his scores of 31 and 18 had a great deal to do with his side"s success by 21 runs. Among his contemporaries at Eton were the late C. J. Ottaway, S. E. Butler, G. H. Longman, A. S. Tabor, Lord Clifton, the Hon. G. (now Lord) Harris, and A. W. Ridley. He made many excellent scores in Army matches. He played a leading part in the Jameson Raid, for which, with four others, he was sentenced to death by Judge Gregorowski. He was buried at Dalham Church, near Newmarket, on October 25th.
