1953

The Coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II, and the beginning of a new glory for English cricket - or so Preston hoped. Neville Cardus welcomed the Australians by looking back at 75 years of Ashes battles. Alec Bedser was feted as a "giant among bowlers". An updated list of dates in cricket history was printed, with the first probable reference of the game dating back to 1300, in the wardrobe accounts of King Edward I. There is also a tour report on West Indies' tour of Australia, 21 years after their first visit there. It was noted that "advance speculation described the visit of West Indies as a tour designed to decide the unofficial 'cricket championship of the world'."
