The sun shone throughout, Denis Compton (3816 runs at 90.85, including 18 hundreds) and Bill Edrich (3539 runs at 80.53) bestrode the land like conquering heroes, and crowds thronged the grounds: Lord's was often full for county games, as Middlesex romped away with the county title. And an England captain of the future, Peter May, scored 651 runs at 81.37 for Charterhouse.
