Wisden

1942

The editor opened with an apology to all those unable to obtain the 1941 edition - wartime paper shortages were to blame - but with only an additional 900 copies of this edition (making 4100) there were many disappointed again. The number of games played increased greatly, and Lord's had a full - if eclectic - schedule of club and school matches. Over 5000 people watched A Lord's XI beat the Anti-Aircraft Brigade, and 15,000 crammed in to see Middlesex & Essex amass 412 for 6 against Kent & Surrey. In Australia first-class cricket continued, but the Sheffield Shield was suspended. Among the public-school records Tom Graveney made his Wisden debut with 27 runs at 13.50 for Bristol Grammar School. And at Dulwich, the 17-year-old Trevor Bailey scored 851 runs at 121.57.
