This was the first year for which the number of the print-run was kept - and there were 8500 books published in all. Debate raged over the experimental lbw law: the editor "felt satisfied", but there were arguments on both sides, and worries that Australia wouldn't fall into line. Concern was expressed at moves to allocate more than one Test to Lord's at the expense of "provincial centres". England's future was a cause of worry following series defeats by South Africa, West Indies and Australia - but within two years the emergence of Denis Compton and Len Hutton would banish the unease. A bad-light indicator - described as a radiovisor - was erected at Lord's bgut was soon dismantled after being dubbed "too mechanical for a sporting game".
