Sydney Pardon's 35th and final edition as editor - "He was a cultured mind," the Almanack wrote in 1963: "He had definite opinions and was not afraid to state them. His influence on the growth of the game throughout the world was immense." Controversy raged, with Yorkshire and Middlesex threatening to refuse to play each other after an altercation at Sheffield, and Cec Parkin slamming the selectors in the national press. Plus ca change. H Pattison & co were still advertising their own-brand horse boots, as used at The Oval and endorsed by WG Grace - "The best I have ever seen."
