Sydney Pardon, the editor, decried suggestions put forward by leading counties that the Championship be made more exclusive by dropping several weaker counties - "an unsportsmanlike proceeding" - in response to widespread criticism that the first-class game was no longer worth watching. Monetary pressures were also centre-stage, with many counties facing financial ruin but for the intervention of generous benefactors. There was a tribute to Tom Hayward after he became only the second man - after WG Grace - to score 100 hundreds.
