The Australians in New Zealand, 1989-90

A full-strength Australian side, captained by Allan Border, paid a brief visit to New Zealand in March. Initially they participated in a triangular one-day tournament against New Zealand and India, which concluded India's tour there, and then they played New Zealand in a one-off Test match which was a reply in kind to the early-season Test in Perth, where New Zealand had escaped with a draw through a splendid fighting innings by Mark Greatbatch.

Australia went through the one-day series undefeated, but in a low-scoring, closely fought match at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, they were beaten for the first time in fifteen Tests. During this match, Richard Hadlee scored his 3,000th run to join I. T. Botham, Kapil Dev and Imran Khan in an élite group of all-rounders with 3,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket.
