New Zealand 2-2 Australia

The Australians in New Zealand, 1997-98

Just before their Test tour of India, Australia played four one-day internationals in New Zealand. They were without Shane Warne, who was resting an injured right shoulder before the Indian expedition. However, when the Australians won handsomely in both Christchurch and Wellington to take a 2-0 lead, no one seemed to notice his absence: captain Steve Waugh was happily talking of a clean sweep.

But New Zealand, led from the front by Stephen Fleming, won an emphatic victory in the third match, and fought hard from an unpromising position in the fourth to square the series. The main talking point of the tour was the behaviour of the crowd at Wellington, where they reacted to the home team's performance by hurling missiles at the Australian outfielders.
