The Prudential Trophy, 1972

When the Test matches were over England and Australia played a series of three one-day games for a trophy named after the sponsors, the Prudential Assurance Company. Of the £30,000 paid for sponsorship £4,000 was allocated for prize money and most of the remainder distributed through the Test and County Cricket Board.

The three matches were played over the August Bank Holiday weekend at Manchester, Lord's and Birmingham. They drew a total attendance of 55,000 and receipts were approximately £46,000. The games were played over 55 overs a side under Gillette Cup rules in sunless but dry weather with the overall result in the balance until the very end of the game at Edgbaston, which England won by two wickets.

Of the prize money £2,600 was won by England. In addition to two £1,000 cheques for winning matches England took two £200 Man of the Match awards and Amiss received £200 as the England Man of the Series. Stackpole was Australia's Man of the Series and Greg Chappell won the Man of the Match award at Lord's.

Brian Close led England because Illingworth, the original choice, had to withdraw through an ankle injury. Fifteen players formed the England party, but three did not play- G. R. J. Roope ( Surrey), D. L. Underwood ( Kent) and C. M. Old ( Yorkshire).

Of the Australian party, B. C. Francis, H. B. Taber, J. W. Gleeson and R. J. Inverarity took no part in the series.
