2003
The 140th edition was the first to feature a photograph on the cover -
the two top-hatted gentlemen who had gambolled there since 1938
were moved to the spine. To soothe diehard collectors, a traditional
cover was also available. The cover star - Michael Vaughan, who
scored 1481 Test runs in 2002 - was chosen by Tim de Lisle, the
Almanack's first one-off editor and, at 40, one of its youngest. He was
appointed to fill the gap between the retirement of Graeme Wright and
the return of Matthew Engel, who was working in America. Inside, the
2003 edition boasted an expanded Features section, including
assessments of Sachin Tendulkar and Steve Waugh. The international
avalanche was demonstrated by coverage of 22 Test series and ten
other one-day tournaments, as well as by brief scores of the 2003
World Cup.
