Australia in Pakistan, 1979-80

Ghulam Mustafa Khan

Australia's cricketers followed their intensive domestic season with a tour of Pakistan which at one time appeared as if it might not eventuate because of financial problems. Eventually the guarantee was improved from A$94,000 to A$150,000, but in the process the tour was cut from eight matches to five - three Tests and two three-day matches - the same number played by Pakistan on their tour to Australia in 1976-77.

For Pakistan, their 1-0 victory in the series was some compensation after their series defeat in India, and it provided Javed Miandad with a happy success in his first series as captain. The previous captain, Asif Iqbal, had announced his retirement from Test cricket after the tour to India, and following severe criticism in the press of Pakistan's performances there, the chairman of the BCCP, Lt-General (Ret.) K. M. Azhar Khan, resigned. In February, the government appointed Air Marshal (Ret.) M. Nur Khan as president of the BCCP and he immediately made Mushtaq Mohammad manager of the Pakistan team. Mushtaq had originally been recalled captain of the team against Australia.
