Sharjah Cup, 1987-88

India, led by Ravi Shastri in the absence of Dilip Vengsarkar, who was serving a six-month ban imposed by the Indian Board of Control, convincingly won the Sharjah Cup and the first prize of $US30,000. New Zealand and Sri Lanka made up the three-nation tournament, which offered $US150,000 in prizemoney, awards and benefits. The major beneficiary was the former Indian captain and all-rounder, Lala Amarnath, while his son, Mohinder, who was playing in the tournament, was the minor beneficiary. Richard Hadlee of New Zealand was the recipient of a special award. There was considerable interest in the appearance of the new Indian leg-spinner, Narendra Hirwani. He did not disappoint his country's thousands of supporters who work in the Arab Emirates, twice taking four wickets against New Zealand and winning the Man of the Series award.
