Herbert Sutcliffe in first-class cricket

Herbert Sutcliffe was born on November 25, 1894. In 1914 he played for Yorkshire 2nd eleven, scoring 249 runs and averaging 35.57 runs per innings. After serving in France as a commissioned officer, Sutcliffe was demobilised early in 1919, and immediately set to work to win a place in the Yorkshire team.

In a match played at Leeds in May, between Yorkshire and Sixteen Colts, Sutcliffe opened the innings for the Colts, and retired after scoring 51 runs. He was included in Yorkshire's first match (v. M.C.C. at Lord's), scored 38 out of 120, and has been an essential part of the Yorkshire team ever since.

Sutcliffe remains one of the most reliable of all English batsmen, his record in Test cricket being unique. He has an ideal temperament for big cricket, and that probably is the reason why his figures in Test cricket are even better than his record in county matches, great as that is.
