South Africa staged a quadrangular one-day tournament, named after the country's president and sponsored by Benson and Hedges, in December 1994 and January 1995. It marked a change in their fortunes after losing ten successive limited-overs games between Test defeats by England and New Zealand; though Pakistan easily dominated the qualifiers, South Africa crushed them 2-0 in the best-of-three finals.
For Pakistan, early success disintegrated as disagreement in the dressing-room over captain Salim Malik's tactics ultimately led to vice-captain Rashid Latif and Basit Ali announcing their retirement from international cricket (rescinded a few months later). Sri Lanka made a spirited attempt to reach the finals, hindered by bad weather in two matches, but New Zealand's season went into a nosedive as they failed to win any of their six games.
