Winners: Pakistan

Sharjah Champions Trophy, 1989-90

Pakistan, unbeaten in their four games, were accomplished winners of the Cricketers' Benefit Fund Series for the Sharjah Champions Trophy. In addition to his team winning all their matches, Imran Khan could reflect on the successful introduction of new players into the Pakistan squad. Shahid Saeed and Sohail Fazal batted with flair, while Waqar Younis, an eighteen-year-old fast bowler, at times looked quicker than anyone in the round-robin tournament. West Indies, who had won the trophy the previous season by beating Pakistan in the final, were disappointing and finished third behind India on run-rate.

The competition was originally scheduled to start on October 12, but it began a day later following the death in Germany of the United Arab Emirates' Deputy Prime Minister, Sheikh Hamadan Bin Mohammad. The CBFS beneficiaries were Fazal Mahmood and Iqbal Qasim of Pakistan, K. Srikkanth and P. R. Umrigar of India, and the West Indies captain, I. V. A. Richards, each of whom received US$35,000 (£20,000 approx.)
